Passengers Spend Hours On The Water After LaHave Ferry Breaks Down

UPDATED: 2:45 p.m.

Eight passengers who were stuck on the LaHave cable ferry for over five hours are now safely on shore.

According to Marla MacInnis, spokesperson with Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, high winds caused a bullwheel shaft, which propels the ferry, to crack.

The ferry stopped about 200 metres from the eastern shore of the LaHave.

The passengers and crew of the ferry were on the water from about 8:30 a.m. until 2:40 p.m.

A maintenance and operations crew assisted with landing the ferry on shore and a coast guard auxiliary vessel were also on site.

A crew member at the scene expected the shaft would be removed and repaired in time to have the ferry running again sometime Tuesday.
