Passing The Test: Mustangs’ O’Toole Plays Hockey With Type-1 Diabetes

A forward on the Charlie’s Pizza South Shore Mustangs has more to worry about then how to put the puck in the net.

Ryan O’Toole has been living with Type 1 Diabetes since he was nine years-old.

O’Toole says he has to pay extra attention to his diabetes on game day.

“I just have to test regularly, make sure I’m sipping on gatorade to keep things balanced during the game and test during the intermissions.”

O’Toole must have drinks or food around him at all times so he can maintain his blood-sugar levels.

The disease hasn’t slowed O’Toole down, though, as he leads the Mustangs in scoring with 32 points in 34 games.

He will be lacing up for the Mustangs in both games this weekend against Dartmouth and Halifax.
