Pentz And Petite Riviere Schools Could Be Eligible For Renovations

Nova Scotia’s education minister says the province is looking at how schools are reviewed.

A decision to close Petite Riviere and Pentz elementary schools was overturned recently and the school board has stated they won’t appeal that decision.

When asked whether the schools could come up for review after school boards are dissolved, minister Zach Churchill says, the school review process is going to be changed.

“Based on Dr. Glaze’s recommendations is to have a longer term view on capital projects and that’s the proecess we want to engage in.”

“Instead of an annual year to year decision on what schools are going to be built and what schools are going to be renovated, we’re going to have a longer term look at that,” he adds.

He says Petite and Pentz could also be eligibile for renovations under the school capital project budget.

“With the dissolving of the boards the (education) department would be the steward of that.”

Churchill says that process would change from annual to more long term.

Renovations to the schools have been looked at in the past and according to assessments done in 2015, the schools are in fair condition for their ages.

Churchill also says local school advisory committees will get more say in how money is spent in their schools.
