A petition with over 1,500 signatures has been given to Lunenburg West MLA Mark Furey by the Greater Petite Area Community Association.
The association is asking for Petite Riviere Elementary School to remain open and to have the petition presented at the Nova Scotia Legislature.
GPACA challenged the South Shore Regional School Board’s decision to close the school next July during a judicial review in Halifax Supreme Court on September 7.
Association Chair Stacey Godsoe says they feel there are still favourable steps to be taken by the provincial government.
“Making legislation retroactive, legislating that we stay open, there are a number of things that could still happen irregardless of the results of the judicial review.”
The school board argues they followed the correct school review process in 2013 and in their March decision to close Petite Riviere in 2018.
A judge has not yet rendered her decision on the judicial review.
