The principal of Petite Riviere Elementary School calls it another success story for the community.
The school participated in the 2017 Plastic Bag Grab challenge, collecting 2,096 bags and diverting 16.8 kilograms of plastic from landfills and waterways.
The school was one of 541 across Canada involved in collecting nearly 2.4-million plastic bags.
Petite Riviere Elementary was named the recipient of the community engagement/social media prize for Nova Scotia.
Scott Rawding says it’s extraordinary work.
“This is the epitomy of a community school down here in Petite (Riviere) and the parents and the community were engaged in doing this and I’m very proud of the students.”
The school was also recognized with the Lieutenant Governor’s award in February.
Rawding says the plastic grab challenge helped keep students engaged in reducing, reusing and recycling materials.
He says it was a valuable learning experience.
“And helping our environment in the long run, obviously. I mean, it’s pretty amazing stats when you here about how many bags were recycled across Canada and what our participation was in that and how we helped the environment and the world.”
The school will get $1,000 in September to be used towards an environmental project.
