Please. Be Careful.

Hopefully, we get rain this weekend. Not that I am the sort of person that wants to ruin your weekend, but we really need rain. A good, long, steady soaking of rain.

The news department here at the radio station has a scanner. The past couple of afternoons, it has been squawking like crazy. It’s almost impossible to keep track. Fires have been breaking out everywhere.

A big thank you to all the firefighters throughout this area. It’s been a tough few days. Actually, more like a tough few weeks. Thankfully, we haven’t had a lot of big fires. A large part of that is probably due to the intervention of those firefighters, because there sure have been a lot of little ones to contend with.

I happened to notice on the Dahl Dispatch Facebook page this morning that there were only five fire departments in Lunenburg and Queens Counties that have not been called out to a fire in the last two days. One of those five is Tancook Island, which is understandable. But when you think of how many fire departments we have in those two counties, that’s a lot of firefighters that are out there trying to keep this situation under control.

Many years ago, as part of my summer job, I worked on a couple forest fires. It was not fun. It was hard work. And it is surprising how much soot can get caked on a human body. I do not envy these people at all, but I do appreciate them.

So please, until we (hopefully) get some much needed rain, and even after… be careful.
