Postal Workers Striking In South Shore

Rotating strikes by Canada Post workers have hit the South Shore.

Members of Canadian Union of Postal Workers Local 018 were on strike in Bridgewater and Lunenburg Thursday.

Local President Amanda Flemming says Canada Post needs to address several issues including: health and safety concerns, job security, forced overtime and overburdening.

“We have routes across Canada that are so huge that our members are working 12-13 hour days and still can’t get their routes done.”

Flemming says that affects member’s home lives as well as their health.

She says Canada Post also needs to address pay equity for all mail carriers.

“We want to bridge the gap between urban and rural because we all essentially do the same job. Equal pay for equal work.”

Flemming says she hopes the union won’t be forced to move from rotating to a full-blown strike because they want to keep delivering customer’s mail.

But she says Canada Post needs to know these are serious issues, and the union will see this action through to the end.
