Powerful Opioid Surfaces in Nova Scotia

Another dangerous drug has made its way to Nova Scotia.

Police have confirmed the opioid, carfentanil, has been discovered in drugs seized last week.

Dr. Robert Strang, chief medical officer of health says the danger with carfentanil is users may not even know they’re taking the highly potent substance.

It can be cut into other powders or pills delivering a fatal overdose.

“Some people will continue to use street drugs. We ask them to do that safely; don’t use alone, have a naloxone kit and if you’re concerned about an overdose call 911.”

Strang reminds Nova Scotians because of a recently passed federal law, you can call for help without fear of being arrested for possession.

There have been 23 deaths in Nova Scotia so far this year with links to opioid use.
