The Premier says the province would like doctors to have better access to practice across the country.
The Premier made the comments following his meeting with his fellow Atlantic premiers.
He’s concerned the bureaucracy is deterring doctors from outside the province from coming here on locums.
“How do you make sure that in this day and age, with the mobility of people that if we can have people come in [and] in particular provide support on a short-term basis, how do we make that as clean and as clear as possible?”
McNeil says those who are willing to work extra shifts between provinces to alleviate some of the shortages should have their qualifications recognized and be able to do so.
“Surely, I think most of us would agree that if someone is operating in Moncton on someone, we would probably let them operate on us as well, and vice-versa.”
McNeil says nurses, therapists and others could be also more accessible to Nova Scotians.
But discussions need to be had with their respective professional bodies before any changes could be made.
