Prepping for a SPOOKtacular Halloween

Budget friendly ideas for décor, food, and fun

Being on a budget doesn’t mean foregoing fun… especially when it comes to holiday celebrations. To help you save money this October, I’m sharing 5 budget-friendly ways to plan a SPOOKtacular Halloween.

1) Create your own costume. Store-bought costumes can be pricey, so why not make your own? With a bit of imagination, you can create something that is unique, fun and budget-friendly. When my boys were young, they’d come to me with their ideas, and we’d work together to bring their visions to life. Everyone was happy, money was saved, and special memories were made.

2) Decorate with inexpensive items. The dollar store has many Halloween decorations, but making your own with inexpensive supplies is a fantastic option too. Pick a cohesive colour scheme and get creative. If you are looking for high impact with low effort, try turning a door into a mummy. Use double-sided tape and white streamers to wrap a door and then add cardstock eyes. Easy peasy!

3) Have fun in the kitchen. What’s a celebration without fun food? Halloween is the perfect time to whip up some simple, spooky treats. Roasting pumpkin seeds is a fun part of pumpkin carving, but using toppings to make a pumpkin face on a pizza is fantastic too. Don’t forget the green pepper stem!

4) Get crafty. Halloween is the perfect time to plan a moms’ paint night or an afternoon making simple crafts with kids. Solitary crafting is wonderful too. This year, I grabbed a white dollar store tablecloth and used it to create a ghost table filled with treats. I glued the bottom of two large garden pots together. Then, I covered the pots with a white disposable tablecloth, I placed a bowl on top, and I added a ghost face to the front. I used my Cricut to create a face, but pieces of felt would work too. I filled the bowl with goodies, and my ghost is now ready to greet trick-or-treaters.

5) Plan to give out fantastic treats. Now is the time to start thinking about what you are going to hand out to the trick-or-treaters, and stock up when you see your favourites on sale. You can also make your treats extra special by getting a little crafty. One fun option is to make lollipop ghosts. Grab some suckers at the dollar store, and cover them with a tissue, cheesecloth, or a piece of white tissue paper. Then, use an elastic, piece of twine, or ribbon to secure it in place. Finish by adding a ghost face. You can use markers, paint, googly eyes, or felt.

Transforming chocolate bars into mummies is another delightful option. Grab strips of dollar store streamers and wrap them around chocolate bars. Then, add googly eyes with white glue. These mummy bars are cute for tricker treaters, school lunch boxes, and Halloween parties.

Halloween doesn’t have to be expensive to be memorable. With a little creativity and imagination, you can create a SPOOKtacular celebration without breaking the bank.
