Province Announces Commission To End Chronicle Herald Dispute

A prolonged labour dispute could soon be coming to an end.

The Nova Scotia government says an industrial inquiry commission will begin working next month to find a resolution between the Halifax Herald and the Halifax Typographical Union.

The two sides have been in a dispute for more than 530 days.

Acting Minister of Labour and Advanced Education, Derek Mombourquette, says this is an exceptional circumstance that needs action.

The Industrial Inquiry Commission process will begin with mediation between the parties.

If a voluntary agreement is not reached, Commissioner William Kaplan will investigate the causes of the dispute.

He will then report his findings and potential recommendations to the minister.

Roughly 60 reporters, photographers, editorial writers, editors, columnists, and support staff walked off the job last January.
