Nova Scotia is recognizing this week as Emergency Preparedness Week.
It lasts until May 9.
The province says residents should be equipped with a kit that should include enough food, water and supplies for 72 hours.
Items like a first aid kit, flashlight, battery-powered or wind-up radio, extra batteries along with water and food.
It’s part of their slogan for people to follow three steps – know the risk, make a plan, and get an emergency kit.
Emergency management co-ordinators will also do their part on social media this week.
They will host a Twitter chat on preparing for emergencies on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until 12 p.m.
People can join in by using the hashtag #epweek .
