Province Proposes More Time Off For Parental Leave

Nova Scotians could soon look forward to more time off work.

Government introduced legislation that would increase the parental leave and combined pregnancy/parental leave from 52 weeks to 77 weeks.

That moves the province in line with changes made at the federal level which allow eligible employees to be paid parental benefits over a period of 35 or 61 weeks.

Also in the works is a new 16 week critically ill adult care leave.

And the definition of family member will be expanded to include persons who are like family, for both critically ill child and adult caregiving leaves.

The changes will take effect immediately upon the bill being passed and receiving royal assent.
