The Nova Scotia government continues to lobby Ottawa to kick in financial support for the Yarmouth ferry.
Natural Resources Minister and Yarmouth MLA Zach Churchill says the route between the town and Portland, Maine is an international highway and is eligible for federal funding.
He says: “We’re hoping the feds will come around on this. We’ve got an election coming up. I don’t know if that will change the nature of the discussion or not. But obviously, we’re very hopeful that it will.”
Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood says there’s no getting around the fact the water route is a form of international highway.
“Its absolutely an international highway. You’re going from Canada to the United States. Its the fastest way to get there. It should open the doors to federal funding.”
The new ferry seaon began June 1st and passenger and vehicle numbers and bookings are said to be way up over last year at this time.
