Queens County Landfill Gets $3.75-million Upgrade

The Region of Queens is making a big investment in waste management.

The municipality is spending $3.75-million on a new waste storage cell at the Queens County Landfill.

CAO Richard MacLellan says the money is coming from waste collection revenues.

“About $1.2-million dollars each year we make in revenue,” he says. “Which [is] revenue we don’t need to collect in taxes from the Region of Queens.”

He says strict regulations mean the 11-year old facility needed more space for waste storage.

However, MacLellan says as awareness about recycling and composting grows, less waste is ending up in the landfill.

The new cell is expected to last at least 10 years.

Work is scheduled to be complete by this fall.
