Queens: ROQ To Develop New Policy For Mobile Food Trucks

The general manager of a Liverpool business just wants fairness and equal playing ground.

Andrew Bursey of Dixie Lee says as many as three food trucks are set up in prominent locations in the town, hurting year-round restaurants.

The Region of Queens current by-law allows the trucks on municipal property with a $10 license.

Bursey says the price tag needs some attention.

“I don”t think we will ever see the fees be raised to a point that is fair and even with brick and mortar businesses; we pay thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars for the priviledge of operating downtown.”

Bursey says bylaws need to be overhauled with increased fees and specific locations determined.

Meanwhile, a food truck operator in Liverpool remains optimistic things will work out.

Pierre Losier of Datzawrap, which also operates in Shelburne and Bridgewater, says he expects something in return if fees are raised.

“What kind of infrastructure, what kind of utilities are you going to be putting in? What kind of advertising in those cases for the increased dollars that I will be putting in for a permit fee.”

A suggestion included relocating all food trucks to the former Legion property but nothing was decided.

For now, Mayor Christopher Clarke is hoping a whole new policy will be created by staff and come back to council in September.
