Queens: Two Names On District 2 Ballot But Only One Wants Your Vote

A job offer was too good to pass up for Christopher Ball.

He was one of two people vying to represent District 2 around the Region of Queens council table in the October 15 municipal election.

However, Ball has decided to drop the bid and accept a job at the Labrador West Arts and Cultural Centre in Newfoundland.

Ball says it’s unfortunate timing.

“Unfortunately, my name will stay on the ballot. However, people will be instructed what the circumstances are and not to vote for me.”

He says the job offer came up suddenly and he’s disappointed he won’t be participating in the municipal election.

Ball, who has lived in Liverpool his entire life, moves to Labrador on Friday.

Meanwhile, the other candidate running in District 2 says she was surprised to hear the news.

Heather Kelly says she plans to let people know about the situation.

“So, it’s basically trying to inform everybody now that he’s not running I’m the only person that’s running but I’m not in by acclamation, which people are assuming that automatically happens.”

She still needs to be voted in and doesn’t get acclaimed because the September 14 date to officially withdraw has passed.

Kelly, who also ran in 2012 against outgoing councillor Bruce Inglis, says she isn’t taking the situation for granted.

She plans to keep campaigning door-to-door and online to help pursuade people to vote for her.
