Radiothon Raising Money To Replace Aging OR Equipment

The biggest one-day fundraiser for the Health Services Foundation is right around the corner.

This year’s CKBW/Country 100.7 Radiothon will help fund new surgical equipment for the operating room at South Shore Regional Hospital.

The goal is to raise $175,000 on February 14 that will go towards replacing seven items.

Managing Director, Arleen Stevens, says they are considered priority pieces in the OR.

“We want to make an impact in the operating room with three special warming cooling blankets, which we just bought through our Christmas direct mail, but also these seven pieces of equipment.”

Some of the equipment has been used for over two decades and needs to be replaced.

Stevens says costs are escalating and expectations remain high.

“There is just not enough money to go around. The community participates at an amazing level here in the South Shore helping us at the Foundation provide the best equipment for the health care that the staff bring back to the community.”

The Radiothon has raised over $590,000 since its inception six years ago.

The seven pieces of equipment include:

ENT Microscope – The current microscope was purchased in 1990 with the normal lifespan being 15 years. This microscope will be used by three ENT surgeons with one coming from the IWK on a regular basis.

Five Anaesthesia Carts – The carts hold all the necessary equipment and drugs that an Anaestheist requires. Current carts were purchased prior to 1982 and do not meet the current needs of practice.

E Pen Drive Set – A pen drive is a piece of equipment used for hand, foot and maxillofacial surgery. It fixes fine bones and is also needed for finger, hand and joint replacements. The current system was purchased in the mid-1980s.

Universal Power Driver – Used in a vast variety of surgeries.

Five NIBP Machines DCC/Endoscopy – These units provide nurses with patients’ vital signs for pre and post-operative care. Majority of current machines are old and well past recommended replacement date.

Syringe Pump – Used by Anaesthetists to deliver medications that require a continual infusion.

Pneumatic Tourniquet – Used by Plastic and Orthopedic surgeons to provide blood control on extremities during surgery. Current unit is well past its replacement date.
