Rats and Mice Challenge Sanitary Conditions At Some N.S. Hospitals

Nova Scotia’s Progressive Conservative Opposition is ringing the alarm bells over conditions in at least two major hospitals. The Victoria General in Halifax and the Cape Breton Regional in Sydney are seemingly infested with rats and mice! Large rats have been spotted in the Cape Breton facility’s receiving entrance corridor and in the basement. The VG’s paliative care unit has been battling mice for months! Health Critic Chris d’Entremont says hospital sanitary conditions are being put to the test, the creatures need to be sent packing but is there money to do it? He says: “I think its a challenge with a lot of our infrastructure in Nova Scotia, especially our hospitals. Are we providing the funding or are the district health authorities moving around money into places that they shouldn’t rather than concentrating on the maintenance of buildings?” d’Entremont is calling on the McNeil government to outline how it plans to deal with the rat and mice issue and how soon! He says the government is being too secretive and providing little if any information to reassure the public.
