RCMP are targeting people texting while driving.
It’s illegal to use a hand held device behind the wheel.
And yet, RCMP have handed out nearly 2,600 tickets for distracted driving across the province so far this year.
Spokesperson Heidi Stevenson says people used to put the phone up on the steering wheel to keep an eye on the road at the same time.
But since police started cracking down, there’s a whole new problem.
“Now, people are hiding it. They have it down and hidden. Their attention is completely off the road, in terms of their visual contact with the road.”
Fines for text messaging while operating a vehicle range from $237.50 to close to $600.
