Research and Prevention Keys To Decline In Cancer Rates

The number of new cases of cancer in Canada is expected to rise by 40 percent by 2030 according to long-term predictions from the Cancer Society.

The increasing number of seniors is seen as a reason.

In Nova Scotia and New Brunswick though, the increase in the number of seniors will be slower and that will be reflected in lower cancer numbers here.

The Canadian Cancer Society’s Kelly Cull says research is key in the battle against the disease.

She says: “And we know that research has a huge impact on our cancer rates. We’ve seen survival rates jump from 25 percent in the 1940’s all the way up to where we are today at 63 percent.”

Cull says prevention is also important such as cutting smoking rates, better eating and living in general.
