Some sailors from Halifax have helped break a fundraising record for their annual Make a Wish fundraiser with $75,000.
The 22nd annual run saw 16 members of HMCS Halifax run in shifts across the province from Sydney to Yarmouth, starting the week of Sept. 14 and wrapped up on Sept. 28.
The Children’s Wish Foundation raises money to grant the wishes for critically ill children.
Ahead of the run, Make-A-Wish spokesperson Hollie Quick said they had about 80 children on the waitlist, and she says it takes about $10,000 to grant a wish.
Quick previously told our newsroom that it’s a lot of effort, but the sailors stay motivated.
“They get to meet different wish kids and their families. They get to spend some time with them,” Quick said.
In a social media post, Make-A-Wish Canada thanked all the volunteers, community members, and everyone who helped. They also thanked the HMCS crew for staying positive throughout the run.
This year, they blew past the goal of $40,000 raised. Make-A-Wish says that is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved.
