Saunders Brothers Set Their Sails For Rio

Less than a week until two brothers from Chester head to Rio to compete in the Olympics.

A community celebration was recently held for Graeme and Jacob Saunders at the Chester Yacht Club.

Hundreds of people wished them well as they compete in the 470 sailing class at the games.

Jacob Saunders says the send-off was a humbling experience.

“I mean, we’re really honoured to be representing our home town and the South Shore of Nova Scotia. Since we got started, the support we’ve received has been phenomenal.”

The brothers recently spent three weeks in the South American waters preparing for the Summer Games.

Saunders says the conditions are among the most diverse the team has ever sailed.

“We could see anything from flat water to choppy water inside the harbour to huge ocean swells or open ocean racing outside the harbour.”

Jacob, who is 24 and Graeme, 26, will head back to Rio on Monday ahead of the opening ceremonies.

They open their competition on August 10.
