School Board: Awareness Days, Months Should Be Celebrated All Year

A South Shore school board official believes awareness days or months don’t go far enough.

The days or months recognize different causes including anti-bullying or cultures.

February is Black History Month across Canada.

Race Relations coordinator Lamar Eason says it’s not just important in February but year-round.

He says, “I think, what it does, is a little bit of a disservice to the cultures, even awareness days. I think we need to have awareness throughout the year and so we should be celebrating cultures throughout the year.”

Black History Month was introduced in 1995 by Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament.

Eason says the month-long awareness is great but it needs to be more in our daily lives.
