School Board Taking Another Look At Snow Closure Policy

A study by South Shore Regional School Board could mean fewer snow days.

The board is looking into the option of delaying opening schools by a couple of hours when the weather is bad.

Halifax Regional School Board put the policy in place this year.

South Shore Regional School Board Spokesperson, Theresa Schroder says delayed openings could lessen the disruptions for families.

“It would allow students to go to school if the weather improves after a couple of hours instead of missing the whole day. Parents could, instead of taking the whole day off work, perhaps take a couple of hours.”

However, Schroder says the region has a set of challenges city schools don’t.

“We have a lot of different areas. A lot of back road areas and roads off of back roads that necessarily wouldn’t be benefiting from a delayed start. But we are looking at it.”

Schroder says for each snow cancellation, the board is comparing how the day would have gone if they had the delayed opening policy.

A decision on whether or not to proceed with delayed openings will be made once all the data is collected.

It isn’t known what impact this will have on next school year.
