Service Pays Tribute To Lost Fishermen

Scores of people are expected to attend a sombre memorial service this afternoon (Sunday) in Lunenburg. The annual ceremony pays tribute to the hundreds of area fishermen who have lost their lives at sea over the last two hundred years or more. Lunenburg Mayor Rachel Bailey says its always a time of deep reflection on a profession that by times can be very cruel and unforgiving. She says: “Its never been for the faint of heart .. going to sea! Certainly the numbers on the fishermen’s memorial speak to just how dangerous this profession has been.” Following the service on the waterfront, a fishing vessel will transport dignitaries out to the entrance to Lunenburg harbour to drop wreaths overboard. The service itself begins at 2pm.
