Sexual Assault Services Help Survivors Feel Safe

It’s estimated 350 people are sexually assaulted in Lunenburg and Queens counties each year.

Coordinators at Sexual Assault Services are working to make sure survivors know they’re not alone.

Dianne Crowell says if a victim isn’t ready to speak with police they’re often afraid to seek help.

She says new rules should make it easier.

“A victim can come forward and get the medical attention that he or she needs,” she says, “as well as the emotional support that may be needed, and still have everything be kept anonymous.”

Crowell says evidence can be kept for five years.

She hopes as people become aware of the service more will come forward.
