Shark Spotted Near Liverpool

A rare sight in Queens County this week.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has confirmed a shark was spotted in Liverpool harbour.

Biologist Warren Joyce says the five foot carnivore was likely chasing a school of mackerel.

He says if you happen to see one, there’s no need to panic.

“Appreciate the view,” he says. “Use caution. Don’t get in the water or anything, but yeah, take in this rare experience to actually see one up close.”

Joyce he says there’s a large number of sharks that call Nova Scotia home, but he they rarely spend time near the surface.

“We do get more species during the summer months when the water is warm, but yeah, they’re here year round and we estimate, Blue Shark population [for example] in excess of a million sharks, Porbeagles probably a quarter million.”

He adds due to boat traffic most stay well away from the coastline.
