Sharks Coach Gives Thumbs Up To Midget ‘X’ Hockey

High school hockey players who were displaced by Nova Scotia teachers’ work-to-rule job action this year are gearing up for provincials.

Hockey Nova Scotia created the Midget ‘X’ Hockey League after school sports were sidelined in December.

The South Shore Ice Sharks finished third after an abbreviated 10 game schedule.

Head Coach Jamie Myra says the league was a positive opportunity for young adults.

He says Hockey Nova Scotia deserves credit.

“Creating an opportunity for these kids to finish their year out with at least a place to play especially those grade 12 kids that would’ve been done on December 3 with no opportunity to play for the remainder of the year.”

But, there were some drawbacks.

Myra says he’s heard minor complaints from players in grade 12.

“They would’ve loved to have their high school jerseys for the last month or so since work-to-rule ended, but when the NSSAF completely cancelled the season that opportunity was taken from them.”

Provincials will be played through the SEDMHA minor hockey tournament in Halifax, starting today and going until Sunday.

The South Shore team, which is made up of players from Park View, play their first game tonight at 8:30 against the Acadia Wildcats.

Hockey Nova Scotia will award a provincial championship banner at the event.
