The mayor of Shelburne says the town’s port needs a lot of work which will require a significant investment.
As with other facilities across Canada, years ago Shelburne’s port was divested by the federal government to municipalities.
But Karen Mattatall says the government didn’t provide much funding at the time.
“And the money has been spent over the years to maintain the wharf is of very significant regional economic importance. It provides many jobs for Eastern Shelburne County.”
She says the port has seen growth over the past few years.
“We want to see growth continue down there but it’s a struggle. We’ve not been able to find any external funding to help us do the necessary repairs.”
Shelburne town council passed a motion to invite the Municipality of Shelburne and the Town of Lockeport to offer financial assistance.
