Single Car Collision Closes Highway 103, Leaves One Dead, One Injured

A 31-year-old Digby County man has died following a single-vehicle crash on Highway 103 near Port Mouton this morning.

RCMP received a call of an incident involving a vehicle between exits 21 and 22 at 4:53 a.m. Upon arriving on the scene, police found an injured man in the passenger seat, and the driver, who had been ejected from the vehicle.

The passenger was transported to hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was pronounced deceased on arrival.

Corporal Jennifer Clarke, communications officer for the RCMP, says police shut down the highway to allow an RCMP Collision Analyst to investigate the scene.

“The cause of the collision is still under investigation,” she said,” but preliminary investigation has determined the vehicle left the roadway, struck some trees, then came to a stop in the ditch.”

Highway 103 was closed for over seven hours as the scene was investigated and cleaned up, leaving many motorists stranded.

“That was really unfortunate for a lot of drivers,” said Clarke, “Because there’s really no detour in that area for us to move traffic around, so it was probably very inconvenient for a lot of people, as it was about seven hours of road closure in that area.”

RCMP reopened the highway shortly after noon, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
