Slow And Steady Makes It Safe

Signs around Lunenburg County are reminding drivers why it’s important to stick to the speed limit.

Lunenburg West MLA Mark Furey has created the posters which read “slow down, we love our kids.”

He says as a former Police Officer it’s an issue that’s close to his heart.

“Enforcement has a responsibility,” he says, “but I think as community members we have a responsibility.

These types of little reminders, I think, really, serves a purpose.” Furey says the community response has been overwhelming.

“Individuals have called and requested them once [they] saw them.

The first order that we had in the office are gone.” Plans to have a new batch printed are already in the works.

Meanwhile, Gold River woman really knows how to slow traffic.

Rosa Hatt has been working to have speed signs installed on the Old Gold River Road for five years.

She says traffic routinely drives too quickly because there are no signs to tell them how fast they should be going.

Hatt has contacted everyone from the department of transportation to elected officials for help.

So she was a bit surprised when her neighbour told her there were 50km/h signs on her street.

“She comes over yesterday morning and said guess what – your speed signs are up. I said finally?”

Hatt says people drive too fast on the road because they don’t know how fast they should be going.

She says it’s a residential road and the slower speed will make safer for pedestrians.

“Lots of times people don’t do anything until something happens.

And then they say oh well, we should’ve used speed signs.”

Hatt says already she’s sees drivers are slowing down because of the new signs.
