The Department of Transportation spent $8-million less on snow removal on the South Shore compared to last year even though work from last April and May ate into some of this year’s budget.
Glen Strang, Area Manager for Lunenburg-Queens, says that sounds about right.
“We’re over 30% less in salt, and salt is our single biggest expenditure.”
He says work was still being done to carve passages through ice well into spring last year.
This year, seasonal spring maintenance is expected to begin much earlier.
“In the spring, of course, is when roads are at their most vulnerable,” says Strang. “So, we monitor the gravel roads and get the grater on them as soon as possible to make them bearable for people.”
He says most of the winter equipment should be put away by the beginning of April.
