South Shore Struggles To Keep Doctors

A lack of medical professionals continues to be a problem in the South Shore.

Dr. Alenia Kysela from the Nova Scotia Health Authority says retaining doctors and nurses is an ongoing challenge.

She says they understand why people get frustrated.

“It can be quite challenging and distressing for people when they don’t have a provider to access,” she says, “and they need to be able to know where to go to get the information they need in order to find someone to give them primary healthcare service.”

Kysela says tuition relief and a relocation allowance are among initiatives to attract medical workers to rural communities.

However, she says they have the most success with doctors who come from a small town.
