Special Olympics Michelin Torch Run in Bridgewater

With the Nova Scotia Special Olympic Provincial Games just days away, athletes from across the South Shore kicked things off on Saturday with the Annual Michelin Torch Run in Bridgewater.

Emily Latta has been competing in the Special Olympics for a number of years and she says for her, the best part of it all boils down to fun and friendship.

“Just being with my team and making new friends and just having fun,” says Latta. “I just like being up there and being on the go.”

Matt Faye, known to his friends and peers as “Shorty” has also been competing in the Special Olympics for several years and this year, he’ll be competing in the 800m and 1500m track.

“My favourite part is competing and being with people,” says an enthusiastic Faye. In fact, this marks his 9th time competing and he’ll also be competing at the National Games being held July 31st through August 4th in Antigonish, NS.

Rebecca Delaney of Liverpool, will also compete at the Nationals in Antigonish this summer in several athletics categories.

“One hundred, two hundred and I think the long jump,” saysa Delaney, who spends a lot of her time training and preparing for the Special Olympics. “I go to the gym Wednesdays and then I work out mostly every Monday.”

The South Shore is sending a total of 9 athletes to the Natonal Games this summer in Antigonish.
