Tancook Island Ferry Out Of Service

Its the only connection between two South Shore islands and the mainland and its been taken out of service! The William G. Ernst, which ferries about 100 passengers daily between Big and Little Tancook Islands in Mahone Bay and Chester on the mainland, just recently underwent maintenance, Now though, its port engine has failed and the ferry has been sent for repairs. Another vessel has been chartered by the province’s Transportation Department to replace the disabled ferry until its repaired, which could take a couple of weeks. There have been calls recently for replacement of the 30 year old Ernst. Residents who use the ferry service say the vessel is becoming too unreliable and a modern, larger vessel is needed.
