That One Time I Sang Karaoke In Public

I don’t have a good singing voice. I know that and have accepted it.

Back when the world was going crazy over karaoke I’d go to the Karaoke Nights at the clubs and enjoy hearing everyone else sing but I knew I should not attempt it.

However one Saturday afternoon a couple of friends and I ended up at one of the sleaziest biker bars in old Dartmouth where this frazzled couple was trying to put on a karaoke show.

The clientele were not interested in the least. For reasons that can only be attributed to a few too many draught beers, I decided to try a song – Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan.

I may have been the first person to make Bob Dylan’s singing sound good. That is, to say, that I was so bad that Bob’s raspy nasal mumbling would have been preferable.

It was like a scene out of the Blues Brothers where the boys are performing behind chicken wire on stage. Dogs in the neighbourhood were probably howling.

I’m sure I heard a few bikers growling ” Get off the stage! Sit Down! ”

That was my one and only time singing karaoke in public. Since then I have tried a couple of songs at parties with friends, but I know my limitations.

Have you ever sung karaoke in public? What was your go-to song? And how did it go?
