The 2026 word of the year is out

Every year dictionaries and websites release their pick for “Word of the Year!” Dictionary.com has released theirs. It’s Maxxing!

Since I’m not the hippest guy around, I had to look it up, and this is the definition:

Maxxing (or the suffix -maxxing) means optimizing, maximizing, or pushing a specific trait, habit, or activity to its absolute limit.

The term can be attached to almost anything. People talk about sleepmaxxing, gymmaxxing, budgetmaxxing, and pretty much anything else they’re trying to improve or get the most out of.

Here are some other honorable mentions that were popular this year apparently!

Affordability – reflecting concerns about the cost of housing, groceries, healthcare, and everyday living.

Data center – highlighting the huge growth of AI and the infrastructure needed to power it.

Odyssey – recognized for its broad cultural and literary use during the year.

Unc – internet slang for an older person who seems out of touch.
