I saw what I think was a bobcat this morning! It was a big animal, anyway. It may have been a bear, but it looked cat‑ish. It was also dark and rainy, so who knows. Bobcats are somewhat rare to see in Nova Scotia, but not as much as these other animals.
Canada Lynx (Nova Scotia population)
Found mainly in the Cape Breton Highlands, a very small, isolated population. They avoid human areas and are nocturnal, making sightings rare.

Roseate Tern
One of the rarest seabirds in Canada, found in just a few nesting colonies in Nova Scotia. Highly protected and extremely sensitive to disturbance.

Little Brown Myotis & Northern Myotis
These once‑common bats are now critically reduced due to white‑nose syndrome. Seeing them now is rare across Nova Scotia.

Bicknell’s Thrush
Found only in high‑elevation habitats such as mountaintop balsam fir forests. In Nova Scotia, its presence is extremely limited, making it one of the rarest songbirds to encounter.

Honorable Mention – Eastern Cougar
This one is still heavily debated across Nova Scotia, but people claim to still see the cat! Officially, there are no cougars in Nova Scotia, but who knows!
