The Sounds of Spring

I’ve heard one. But I’m still waiting for others.

I heard geese over the weekend. Spring arrived and so did they.

I didn’t see them, but I could hear them honking away as they flew past. I’m not sure how they knew that spring had arrived. I don’t think they have much use of calendars. They may be able to tell from the angle of the sun. Or maybe one of them checked the forecast and noticed it seemed to be warming up around here over the next few days, so they decided to head north before all the good nesting areas were taken.

In any case, it was nice to hear. I’m sure there will be other arrivals over the coming days.

I had one person tell me they have heard spring peepers already. That is a bit of a surprise. We have still had some pretty cold weather at times. So I didn’t think they would be around just yet. You hear about things like iguana warnings for people in Florida, where lizards start getting too cold and falling out of the trees, then waking up again when it warms up the next day.

That has to be pretty embarrassing for your average cold blooded critter. Especially when it’s mating season, like for the peepers, and you get halfway through your song and just fall off your bush. You’re not likely to impress anyone that way.

I went out and did some listening last night. I drove around a bit, stopping at a couple places where I have heard peepers in the past, but nothing yet. I know they’ll be along soon.

It’s always a sure sign that we are truly getting into spring weather when the peepers start to sing.

So far, they aren’t joining in the spring chorus with the geese. Hopefully soon.
