Every iconic song has a interesting story behind it, but few are as raw and deeply personal as REO Speedwagon’s “Keep On Loving You.”
Kevin Cronin didn’t just write a hit he poured one of the most painful moments of his life into a song that would go on to define the band.
The inspiration came when Kevin discovered that his then‑girlfriend (and future wife), Denise, had been cheating on him before they were married. instead of leaving her, he made the difficult choice to stay, to try to work it out, and to channel the emotional turmoil into music.
He later admitted it was the hardest song he ever wrote and you can hear every ounce of that hurt and hope in his voice.
In an interview, Kevin described the track as “a yin‑yang thing.”
The verses show “trouble in paradise,” he said, but at the heart of the song is his belief that people can change and that a rough patch doesn’t automatically mean the end of a relationship.
As for him and Denise, the two eventually went their separate ways a few years later. But the sentiment, the struggle, and the honesty of that moment remain immortalized in the song. And life clearly had bigger plans for Kevin: in 1992, he married the true love of his life. Decades later, they’re still together.
Ironically, “Keep On Loving You” almost didn’t happen. The band wasn’t initially sold on it, they thought it was too soft, too gentle. But once they leaned into it, transforming it into a full‑blown power ballad, everything clicked. The result?
A No. 1 hit in the United States and No. 2 in Canada, and now one of the most beloved songs in REO Speedwagon’s catalog.
