Truck Spills Lobster Across Highway 103

A tractor trailer dumped its load of lobster across Highway 103 early Saturday morning.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Derek Smith says the driver swerved to avoid an animal near the Port Mouton exit and lost control.

Some media outlets reported RCMP had said the public could come help themselves, something Smith says they would never do.

“It actually created quite a bit of a traffic concern and hazard for people stopping on the side of the 103 highway trying to get at some of these lobsters. We ended up having [RCMP] members on the side of the highway for several hours to deter that.”

Smith says RCMP had to secure the scene while crews worked to clear up the lobster.

“Even though it appeared the product had been destroyed, we are responsible to look after people’s property. That’s it, simply in a nutshell, it belongs to somebody.”

The driver was shaken up and taken to hospital as a precaution but was later released.

Smith says the value of the lobster is estimated at around a half milion dollars.
