Truro to host 2028 World Women’s Curling Championship

Truro will welcome some of the world’s best women’s curling teams in 2028, marking the first time the town has hosted a world curling championship.

World Curling and Curling Canada announced Wednesday that the BKT World Women’s Curling Championship will take place at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre from March 17 to 26, 2028.

The tournament will feature 18 teams from around the world, including Canada as the host nation.

Truro Mayor Cathy Hinton says the community is excited to welcome the international competition.

“This is the first time a world championship curling event will be held in Truro. We welcome the 18 teams, their families and curling enthusiasts from near and far to see all our community has to offer,” Hinton said.

The Rath Eastlink Community Centre has seating for about 3,100 spectators and has experience hosting major sporting events.

It previously hosted Grand Slam of Curling competitions in 2015 and 2018, along with international hockey tournaments, including the 2025 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Curling Canada CEO Nolan Thiessen says Truro’s experience hosting major competitions helped make it a strong choice.

“Truro has a proud history of hosting major curling events, and we look forward to building on the strong legacy that curling has established in this community,” Thiessen said.

Local tourism officials expect the championship to bring significant economic activity to the region as athletes, families and curling fans travel to Nova Scotia.

Central Nova Scotia Tourism Development Executive Director Nick Sharpe says the tournament presents an opportunity to introduce visitors to local businesses and attractions.

The championship will mark the 20th time Canada has hosted the event since it began in 1979.

Canada has won the women’s world title 19 times, most recently in 2025 with Rachel Homan’s team.

Nova Scotia last hosted the competition in 2024 in Sydney.

The 2028 event will receive support from the federal government through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

Information about tickets and volunteer opportunities will be announced at a later date.
