Two Local Fire Departments Consider Merging

Blockhouse rate payers want their fire department to join with Mahone Bay.

The rate payers approached the town asking them to consider the move.
Mayor Joe Feeney says it’s a sticky situation.

“The decision right rests with their fire service providers,” he says,”but, the people who pay the bills are the ratepayers. So, it’s a question that needs serious discussion”

He says, despite that, they both need a new facility that neither can afford on their own.

Council says they’ll meet with Blockhouse ratepayers to discuss the idea further.

In the meantime, Blockhouse Fire Department is all for the idea of sharing services with Mahone Bay.

In fact, Fire Chief Paula MacDonald, says it was their idea in the first place.

“We persued Mahone Bay Fire Department for probably over a year,” she says, “to see if they had an interest. At the time that they gave us an answer Mahone Bay Fire Department was not interested.

MacDonald says she was surprised to hear on CKBW this morning that it had been an issue at the most recent town council meeting.

She says at no time has council discussed it with the Blockhouse Fire Department.

MacDonald plans to follow up with council today.
