Ultrasound Arrives Thanks To South Shore Generosity

Less than three months after another successful Radiothon, the results have been unveiled.

Money raised this year went towards a new ultrasound machine at South Shore Regional Hospital.

It replaces a unit that was ten years old.

Chris Connolly with the Nova Scotia Health Authority says they were able to get the new machine so quickly because of the realignment of the regional health authorities into one.

He says a provincial approach changes the way they deal with suppliers.

“We tell the vendors that for the next three to four years, you will get all the business for similar pieces of equipment if you are the successful proponent for this competition. So the vendors, they sharpen their pencils.”

The $180,000 ultrasound was completed funded through the Health Services Foundation and their donors.

Diagnostic Site Lead Dr. Chen Meng says the ultrasound machine is constantly in use because it is so versatile.

“Anywhere from stroke, cancer, kidney stones, gall stones, blood clots in the legs, arms, to prgenancy and to little children. Pretty much anything you can think of, you can use ultrasound.”

Meng says the new ultrasound will be more dependable and will offer more consistent treatment for patients.
