Uncertainty Around Future Of Pentz And Petite Riviere Schools

There is still uncertainty about what will happen to Pentz Elementary school after a recent court decision saw a motion to close Petite Riviere Elementary overturned.

Both schools were slated to close at the end of the 2017-18 school year and were tied to the same motion.

A judicial review by Justice Christa M Brothers found the South Shore Regional School Board was unfair in how it went about making the decision to close the school.

In a statement SSRSB says their members met with legal counsel Thursday to discuss how to best proceed and what the impact the court decision will have on Pentz.

“As per the directives sent to all Nova Scotia school boards by the Minister of Education, the SSRSB needs to consult with the Minister on any substantive decisions. It is currently considering a number of factors, and ramifications of the Court decision, including the impact on Pentz Elementary School,” reads the statement.

The school board says Superintendent Scott Milner will reach out to the Pentz Elementary School Advisory Council regarding the issue.

Allen Sullivan, Pentz SAC co-chair, says they have a meeting scheduled with the SAC and Education Minister Zach Churchill and are hoping for some definitive answers.

He says the hope has always been to keep the school open.
