Union Wants Better Safety Standards Following Attack On Pregnant Nurse

The province’s largest union is sounding the alarm about health care worker’s safety after a nurse at the province’s Forensic Hospital was attacked by a patient earlier this week.

NSGEU President Jason MacLean says the woman who is 33 weeks pregnant, tried to sound her personal alarm but the unit failed because it had been taped together.

Another patient and staff eventually came to the nurse’s aid.

MacLean says issues with the units were brought to the attention of the Health Authority three weeks ago.

“The Occupational Health and Safety Committee within the workplace notified the employer that they needed a safety assessment performed on the facility. The employer actually responded saying that, that would be a waste of money.”

MacLean is concerned someone could die if issues like this aren’t addressed.
