User Fee Increase To Affect Local Ferries

The Nova Scotia government is increasing most user fees by three per cent.

It means the cost of fishing licenses, home care and environmental assessments will increase this year.

The fee adjustment is tied to spikes in Nova Scotia’s consumer price index in 2013 and 2014.

The Progressive Conservative Party questioned the move – calling user fees a fancy word for tax.

However, Premier Stephen McNeil endorsed it.

The adjustments will increase revenue by $7.7 million for the 2015-16 fiscal year.

A few fees will increase by more than three per cent including provincial cable and island ferry rates.

It will affect users of the LaHave River and Tancook Island ferries.

The changes take affect April 1.
