VIDEO: Vigil Remembers Missing And Murdered Aboriginal Women And Girls

It was a gathering to remember missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls.

Dozens of people attended the first annual Sisters in Spirit vigil at Mi’kmaq grounds in Lunenburg; hosted by Second Story Women’s Centre.

Executive Director Jeanne Fay says it was an opportunity to show solidarity.

“In order to end the violence, non-Aboriginal people have to stand with our sisters.”

A 2014 report by the RCMP estimates there have been almost 1,200 cases of missing or murdered Aboriginal women over the past 30 years.

The event featured a prayer and smudge by Elder Ellen Hunt, a moment of silence, drumming and songs by the Heartbeats and Women of the Shore and a call to action for change.
