A large group of local volunteers will gather in Queens County for the sixth annual bird survey hosted by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The goal is to guage the health of the bird population in the area – which extends over 40 kilometres from Lockeport to Port Mouton. Coordinator Doug van Hemessen says volunteers will help the NCC gather important data on bird populations for the area. “We mainly looking for geese and ducks that tend to over winter there, so they come down fro their summering grounds and stay for the winter. So, we go down and see how many are there this time of year.” The data will be submitted to the Canadian Wildlife Service – and then a report will be produced examining trends. About 30 people have signed up to help out with the survey. It will take place on Saturday. It’s the final bird study of the year involving the NCC along the South Shore.
